Jon's Bad Vinyl

OK, I was 13 years old. I loved the band Chicago growing up. My brothers and sisters influenced me a lot in my music choices as a youngster. Chicago’s first 8 albums were great. I think it was because of Chicago that I took up the trombone. Unfortunately, Chicago started becoming a very elevator oriented band. They could still rock, but the only hits they could make were crap like “If you leave me now”. I bought Chicago XII - Hot Streets (the only album with their pictures on it) trying to find 13 albums that I really wanted through Columbia House. It was the first album after the death of their original guitarist Terry Kath. Maybe I bought it hoping that Terry’s death might have spurred them into some real music again. No such luck. One of their big hits off of it was “No Tell Lover”… ARGH!!!

I am sure there are more

I think that picture is gayer than the Styx one I put up.

No arguement there

I only remember them doing If you leave me now. Maybe that was the one which we got over here in the UK.

As for Styx we got Babe. :)

Babe was the downfall of Styx

I love Chicago but, as you say, it is mainly old Chicago. After that it all seems to sound the same.

Stacey - Thanks for the invite.

Gab - Good luck with the excavation

Barman - It's almost as if they decided to put the horns in the background so that Peter Cetera could bore us with more and more ballads. I don't count Chicago IX since it was a Greatest Hits... and a shitty one at that. The chopped up some of their greatest songs to be more radio friendly. I did end up buying a box set of theirs on CD a few years ago called Group Portrait. It was much more of a greatest hits than Chicago IX. It too had a picture on the cover. One of their "concepts when starting out was being a faceless band. It seemed to keep their egos in check for the most part.

Jodes - Styx was always one of my medium bands. One that I was hot and cold on them for a while until I was in high school. Pieces of Eight was to me their last good album, then they started to suck. I totally respect Tommy Shaw leaving. Dennis De Young was being a total ass at the time. Plus Tommythen put out a solo record that wasn't too bad... and he did 2 different versions of a video. Both were the same except one of them had all the women naked for the Playboy Channel's video show. Kind of an R rated MTV hour. I was in college at a tech school. I learned from the EE geeks how to pirate cable :D

Erika - Are you old enough to ever own any vinyl?

Chrissie - Gimme your best shot, babe

i have a styx album on special green vinyl.

oh yeah. you know you're jealous.

Terry - I had an EP by Klark Kent that was on green vinyl. Klark Kent was actually Stewart Copeland, the drummer for The Police. I also had a laser etched album from The Split Enz. Very cool shit back in the 80s

I have to agree with Bryon, I am more of a fan of the old Chicago. Who can forget, "If you leave me now..." I think that's the name of the song! Still an old corny favorite of mine!

Ah, the songs of prom, I remember them well. And the song's of wedding's promises (Colour my world).... And the songs of having a fun times (Saturday in the park) and songs of missing your love (Wishin you were here), and of happy love (Make me smile).... and songs of break up at the end of highschool (yes, If you leave me now...)

Terry Kath had such a great voice, why on earth did they let Cetera sing lead so much?

And while the "whole world was watching", and then they just fizzled out into oblivion.....

Styx played at the highschool at the town next to where I grew up. Missed the show of course. DANG. Saw Santana tho at our HS.

Oh crap... I'm much to young to even have the ability to name a Chicago song.

Good? Bad? Who knows...

Looking forward to your HNT.
Thanks for finding my blog.

Deb - The only old Chicago "corny" song I like is "Old Days"

KJ - They shared singing between Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, and Terry Kath up until his death after release of Chicago XI. After that Cetera took on even more. I think Robert Lamm was my favorite of their singers.

Blondie - I won't hold your age against you :D... HNT? Well, I haven't done one in many many months, I don't know if any of my friends have recovered from back then.

yeah after i posted that - I did some Tommy research!!! I saw a behind the band a few years back and that made Tommy out to be a total @@@@!!! But I did my research and I still love Styx, the old stuff........

Terry - I don't think so hun. The whole Klark Kent/Superman... green (Kryptonite) vinyl. Mine was VERY cool

Erika - It's hard for peopple to say these days that MJ was cool, but back in the day he was the shit.

Jodes - I am sure in some peoples eyes Tommy was a dick, but he was not liking the direction that the band was going. He was a rocker and they were trying to go more techno. I feel for him.
